How to Prepare for Your First Camper Trip

Your first camper trip is exciting… but, as we know from experience, it can also be a bit stressful. To avoid chaos and fully enjoy the adventure, it’s best to approach it methodically. Here are a few practical tips to help you get started.

1. Get to Know Your Camper

Before hitting the road, spend a day familiarizing yourself with the vehicle and its features.

Check:

how the heating and air conditioning work,
where the water, electricity, and gas connections are located,
how to properly unfold the bed and make use of the available space,
the operation of safety sensors, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and door/window locks,
where the lights, sockets, and chargers are,
how the roof ventilation works,
how to access storage compartments and lockers.

2. Keep Your Schedule Flexible

You don’t need to plan every minute — that’s the whole point of traveling by camper — but it’s good to have a general route, your first overnight stops, and possible rest points in mind.

It’s worth knowing:

where campsites or camping areas are along your route,
their opening hours and availability (we once ended up spending a night in front of a closed gate),
where you can find fuel stations or parking spots with electricity and grey water disposal,
which roads and bridges have weight or height restrictions,
where campers are not allowed to enter.

3. Plan Your Equipment and Supplies

To make your trip smooth and comfortable, it’s best to write down everything you might need.

We divided our list into the following categories:

Documents and accessories (e.g. travel apps or Internet access tools),
Basic tools,
Camping accessories,
Kitchen supplies,
Bedroom essentials,
Bathroom essentials,
Cleaning and chemical products,
Entertainment and leisure,
Non-perishable food,
Clothing and personal items (divided per person),
Pet supplies,
Medications.

4. Learn the Basics of Camper Operation

Before setting off, take time to understand how to handle a camper. Learn to use larger mirrors, anticipate longer braking distances, and pay attention to the height and width of the vehicle — driving a camper is quite different from driving a standard car.

Apart from driving itself, it’s also worth learning how to:

use the chemical toilet,
empty grey water,
connect electricity and water,
level the camper on uneven ground.

5. Prepare Mentally

Traveling by camper is a unique adventure — full of daily discoveries, small challenges, and simple joys waiting around every corner. Keep in mind that:

embrace a slower pace,
expect small inconveniences (like outside noise or limited space),
enjoy simple pleasures — morning coffee with a view, a spontaneous walk, or a sunset by your camper.

Although it may seem complicated at first and require some preparation, it’s actually much easier than you think. Each day brings small surprises and moments of joy — a scenic coffee break, an unplanned stroll, a beautiful sunset. It’s an experience full of freedom and adventure, teaching you to appreciate the simple things in everyday life.
